How to Stop Stress
Getting rid of stress
Chances are that all of us have experienced some amount of stress in our lives including family-related stress and stress related to our jobs. However, there are some common forms of stress that nearly all of us will experience at some time or another that can be avoided. These include stress from debt, stress from working too many hours and stress by taking on too many task whether at home or in our family lives. These common causes of stress can be avoided by taking the lead and getting ahead of them before they become problematic.
Stress related to debt
Let’s face it, we live in a society that encourages us to “keep up” with friends, neighbors and even our families. However, we all have different income levels, different spending habits and different needs. Just because your sister bought a new car, the latest electronic gadget, or has a brand new wardrobe doesn’t mean that you have to run out and do the same. Here are some simple ways to avoid debt related stress:
Live within your means – If you can’t pay for it don’t buy it! In our credit-oriented society, it’s all too simple to slap down a credit card to buy the biggest screen television, the newest computer or the latest clothing fad. One good rule of thumb is that you don’t have to purchase these big-ticket items on a credit card. If it’s something you really want, save for that big purchase by budgeting a small amount of money every week until you can afford it.
Lower credit card debt – The less you owe on credit cards, the more disposable income you’ll have every month. While it may be tempting to purchase something on credit, paying off your credit cards in a timely manner will allow you to have more disposable income. Additional disposable income means you can buy more things for cash without getting buried in debt.
Stress related to work
Workplace related stress can be devastating and can have negative consequences on your career. Stress caused by difficult bosses, working too many hours, or working with uncooperative co-workers can all add up to a very stressful workplace. Don’t let stress in the workplace cause you other problems, use some of these handy tricks to stay focused on your job without letting stress win.
Don’t take work home – Avoid taking your work home at the end of the day. If you find that you are consistently behind in tasks, talk to your supervisor or manager about getting some help. Before doing that, make sure that you’re not wasting time doing things that don’t need to be done (or procrastinating unnecessarily). If work isn’t completed during the work day, it should be able to wait until tomorrow.
Nasty coworkers – When dealing with coworkers who are simply nasty, it’s best to get them aside and talk to them. This includes your boss! If they don’t know that they are adding to your work-related stress, they can’t do anything to stop it. If the situation doesn’t improve, talk to your manager or human resources department if needed.
Learn to say no!
Like it or not, we cannot be all things to all people. If you are taking on more than you can easily handle, you are creating your own stress. You must learn to do things in moderation. While it’s admirable to take on additional tasks at work or help out a family member, if these things are taking more time than you can reasonably manage, you’re only going to find yourself with higher stress levels.
Stress is not good for any of us. It can ruin our outlook on our jobs, our family and life in general. Managing stress may be as simple as taking a look at the things you are doing and addressing them one at a time. Sometimes, preventing stress from getting the best of you is as simple as taking a look at your life and making sure you do not put yourself in positions that will cause stress in the first place.
