Survivalism

Survivalists are people who hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Survivalists want to stay ahead of the pack so they take the time to develop the skills and mindset and stockpile the materials needed to stay totally self reliant in any emergency situation.

American survivalism is rooted in the 1960's when the fear of nuclear war prompted people to build fallout shelters and stockpile in the event of a nuclear attack. Over the years the rationale behind the survivalist mentality has changed according to whatever threats are perceived as imminent: hyperinflation, civil unrest, societal collapse, food shortages, and war. Other survivalists ascribe to the view that it is necessary to prepare for the apocalypse.

Unfortunately over the years survivalists have been painted in a negative light by the media. Popular belief holds that survivalists are paranoid and that preparing for disasters is a type of aberrant behavior. However recent events have attested to the wisdom of survivalism: 9/11, the recession, hurricane Katrina, as well as disasters in other countries all show that the future is uncertain and disaster can strike at any time, anywhere.
