Humans have been using geothermal energy since the caveman days. Now, with our advanced technology geothermal power is used for heating, cooling, and for producing electricity for large industrial projects. When geothermal power is used for the home, it is utilized as a direct heat exchange system - not to produce electricity - but for home heating and cooling.

The advantage of geothermal heating and cooling is that, unlike solar or wind power, almost anywhere in the world can tap into the stable temperatures under the earth's crust. Additionally, a direct exchange geothermal unit will provide heat in the winter and cool air in the summer which can significantly decrease one's dependence on grid power. While residential geothermal system owners currently enjoy rebates, these systems are very expensive to install and must be seen as an investment. Plus, you still have to rely on electricity for your other energy needs.

Nevertheless, geothermal power could become one of the major players in energy self reliance for our nation. A 2009 report by NYU Stern stated that of all the sources of renewable power, geothermal power has the best cost-effective potential for producing electricity: second place is wind power.
